Hi there! I’m Sophia Drewry, an epidemiologist and data scientist who enjoys using data to better understand public health challenges and improve health outcomes. I currently work at the CDC National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD), where I support research and programs focused on improving the lives of people born with spina bifida.
I earned my Master of Public Health in Epidemiology from the University of Georgia Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. During my graduate studies, I focused on the relationship between climate and health, exploring how large-scale climate patterns can influence infectious disease transmission. My research combined epidemiology, machine learning, and environmental data to better understand the health impacts of a changing climate. More specifically, the impact of El Nino and La Nina on dengue incidence in Iquitos, Peru.
Along the way, I’ve had the opportunity to work with Center for the Ecology of Infectious Disease (CEID), the CDC Dengue Branch in Puerto Rico, and the Southeast and Caribbean Climate Alliance. These experiences expanded my understanding of infectious disease dynamics, climate and health, and the many ways data can inform public health decision-making.
Working across research, surveillance, and applied public health settings has given me a broad perspective on how data can be used to answer real-world questions.

What excites me most about working with data is the opportunity to apply the same analytical tools to a wide range of complex problems. Throughout my career, I’ve worked across diverse areas including infectious disease epidemiology, climate and health, behavioral health, and birth defects research. Regardless of the subject matter, I’m drawn to projects that combine rigorous analysis, thoughtful data visualization, and clear communication to turn data into insights that support better decisions.
