Hi, I'm Sophia. Welcome to my space on the internet. Let's talk epidemiology, data science, and design.

About me

Hi there! I’m Sophia Drewry, a data science enthusiast with a deep passion for data analysis and computational epidemiology. I am currently an ORISE fellow at the CDC National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD), where I leverage data to improve the care of those born with spina bifida.

I received my Master of Public Health in Epidemiology from the UGA Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. My academic journey involved extensive research on the impact of climate phonemoena on disease incidence, studying the impact climate change has on human health, specifically the impact of El Nino and La Nina on dengue incidence using machine learning modeling (Iquitos, Peru).

I gained valuable experience in the advanced application of spatial modeling at the Center for the Ecology of Infectious Disease (CEID). Additionally, my work at the CDC Dengue Branch in Puerto Rico on the COPA project deepened my understanding of climate predictors and their implications for public health. I have also been fortunate in having the opportunity to work for the Southeast and Caribbean Climate Alliance

My expertise lies in:

  • Advanced data analysis and statistical modeling
  • Computational epidemiology
  • Data visualization and human-centered design

I think what excites me most about this field is the fact that I can apply these skills to a wide variety of subject matter and diseases. As of 2024, I have worked in zoonotic diseases,  ecological modeling, smoking cessation and now birth defects.

I am always on the lookout for projects that combine my interest in computational methods and innovative data visualization to create actionable insights and effective communication tools.

Outside of academia, you can find me biking around Atlanta and experimenting with various fermentation projects. I am passionate about tenant rights and housing equity (if this interests you, consider supporting my business partner Ben Perkins and I’s a pet project – rentbird)
